Can sin be forgiven? Can it be erased? Can it even be transformed into good? In the book of Exodus1 we read about the events relating to the making of the Golden Calf. This was an unfortunate transgression in which large numbers of Jews took part, combining idolatry, immorality and murder.2 Wisely, the women in the community kept away and so did the Levites. After this mass betrayal of G‑d and His teachings, Moses had to plead with G‑d in order to prevent the Jewish people from being destroyed.

Wine Before You Dine

Shabbat enters with words of wonder poured upon rich wine, to fulfill the verse, “Remember the Sabbath day to sanctify it.”We call it kiddush, a ritual of words and drink, a magical bridge from the harried weekday to the day of rest. So enchanted we are by the kiddush that we repeat it again in a different form by day. The kiddush serves as the kickoff for the evening and daytime Shabbat meals.

Towards A Purpose Beyond Our Conception

Ki Sissa; Exodus 30:11-34:35

Sichos Shabbos Parshas Ki Sissa, 5751, 5752

The Path Upward:The name of this week’s reading, Ki Sissa, raises a question. Literally, Ki Sissa means “when you raise up,” and refers to the elevation of “the heads of the children of Israel.”1 Since the majority of the reading centers on the sin of the Golden Calf and its consequences, one is prompted to ask: How can this terrible sin contribute to the elevation of the Jewish people?

Anti-Israel Boycott Strategy Loses Ground in Europe
“Those who honor me I will honor, but those who despise me will be disdained.”
(1 Samuel 2:30)

Please pray for God to rise up people who will stand up and fight for justice in trading, both
in Israel and in Europe, and for strong connections and unity between them.
Please pray that God will turn the peoples heart in Italy so that Italy will be a nation that bless Israel.

G-d then summoned Moses to Mount Sinai for a third 40-day stay. During this stay, G-d revealed His thirteen attributes of mercy to Moses. By invoking these attributes, it would always be possible to secure G-d’s forgiveness.

Elevating the Power within Sin

נֹשֵׂא עָוֹן וָפֶשַׁע וְחַטָּאָה וגו': (שמות לד:ז)

[The 10th, 11th, and 12th attributes of Divine mercy are that G-d can] forgive premeditated misdeeds, rebellious misdeeds, and unintentional misdeeds. Exodus 34:7

The Hebrew word for “forgive” used in this verse literally means “carry” or “lift.
